Why Convert a Bella (vs. something else)?
I’ve owned Vespas, Lambrettas, Heinkels, Hondas, and now Bellas. I’m going to let you in on something I’ve discovered:
Bellas might be the best candidates for conversions of any two wheeled vehicles!
Why is that?
- There’s a strong interest in them around the world so there’s an appreciation of the design plus parts availability.
- There’s a lot of space for batteries.
- There are two EV motor mounting options.
- Several people have completed Bella EV conversions, so there are examples to learn from.
For example, you can do an economical conversion with just a mid-mount motor and a small battery pack. Alternatively, you can use a hub motor and install a much larger battery. Want even more range? Add extra battery capacity in side packs on attached to the fold down luggage carriers.
The Bella has a cavernous amount of space if you decide to go the hub motor route. You can fill the engine area with a large, low mounted, perfectly centered battery pack that won’t detract from the handling of the bike.
At an estimated 100-watt hours/mile consumption and a large battery you could have a range of over 100 miles (and a much thinner wallet)
I’ve completed the planning stage and I’ve decided on the following configuration:
- 5kw hub motor
- Large, center mounted battery pack with between 50-100 miles of range.
- Rear disk brake
- Reverse gear option
- Key fob (Keyless) ignition and security
